So, the next thing (well, current thing!) is really the save system. Since I am going to do this online component thing, or at least try it, it requires a bit of thought with the save system.
What I'm going to start off with, is allowing the ability for multiple save slots, where each slot is a character. You can play multiple characters, which all live in the same universe but you only can control one at a time. The universe is keyed (usually) to the system clock, so it always is advancing, moving, changing, etc. even when you aren't playing (this actually isn't such a huge difficulty for what I have in mind)
So the first step really is making so you can have multiple charas in the same universe on your machine. This will take care of the save system and also really help lay the groundwork for networkizing it.
